William T. "Bill" Weitzel

William T. "Bill" Weitzel, 61, died Sunday, July 11, 2010 near Lantry, South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in a motorcycle accident. He was employed there by the General Convention of Sioux YMCA’s as the Executive Director.

 Bill was born in Spring Green, Wisconsin on July 18, 1948 and graduated in 1966 from Spring Green High School. He served in the U. S. Army in Germany and then attended the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse majoring in recreation.

 Bill was employed by the La Crosse, Wisconsin YMCA as well as YMCA’s in Denver, Colorado, Lincoln, Nebraska, St. Louis, Missouri, Benton Harbor-St. Joseph, Michigan,  Covington, Louisiana, and the General Convention of Sioux YMCA’s, Dupree South Dakota. He started his career as a program director, and in the last two positions served as Branch Director and Executive Director respectively.

 He is survived by his sister Mary Wells of Phoenix, Arizona; former wife, Karen Meyer of  La Crosse, Wisconsin; two step daughters, Dana Laufenberg (Jay) of Waunakee, Wisconsin and Michelle Laking of Muncie, Indiana.

 He was preceded in death by his parents Keith and Katherine Weitzel, brother Paul Weitzel, and sister Eleanor Gorman.

 There will be a Memorial Service at the YMCA in Dupree, SD on Wednesday July 21st at 6:30 p.m followed by a pot luck supper.  In addition, a Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the EcoPark Building located in Myrick Park, 789 Myrick Park Drive, La Crosse, Wisconsin 54601.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to any of the above YMCA’s or to YMCA Camp Kitaki ,% Lincoln YMCA, 570 Fallbrook Rd. Suite 210, Lincoln, NE 68521 or to Camp Wood YMCA, 1101 Elmdale, KS 66850.
